The 2010 U.S. Census Bureau statistics show that there are 154,000 at-home dads.

They’re wrong.

By a lot.

The reason is in how they define a stay at home dad: a father with children at home who earns no income in the previous year or tries to earn income in the previous year or wished he earned income in the previous year or went to school or thought about going to school… you get the picture. RebelDad Brian Reid explains it all extraordinarily well here.

At Daddyshome we define “Stay At Home Dad” much simpler: “Fathers who are the primary caregivers of their children.”

But, in case that is not simple enough for you to determine whether or not YOU are a bona fide stay at home dad, I have developed the following test:

– If you are with your children for as many or more daytime hours per week than your spouse…

YOU are a stay at home dad.

– If you are with your children regularly for some daytime hours per week…

YOU are a stay at home dad.

– If you don’t work 5 days a week…

YOU are a stay at home dad.

– If you are going to school and also taking caring of the kids…

YOU are a stay at home dad.

– If you have taken the kids to the doctor by yourself in the past year…

YOU are a stay at home dad.

– If you pick up your kids from preschool…

YOU are a stay at home dad.

– If you know more than one of the moms’ names of your kids’ friends…

YOU are a stay at home dad.

– If you have taken your kids to the hardware store at 10am on a Wednesday…

YOU are a stay at home dad.

– If you have emailed your kid’s teacher…

YOU are a stay at home dad.

– If you can’t count the number of diapers you’ve changed…

YOU are a stay at home dad.

– If you drive a mini van…

YOU are a stay at home dad.

– If you have been to a PTA meeting…

YOU are a stay at home dad.

– If you have ever been the only dad at a playground…

YOU are a stay at home dad.

– If you witnessed your kid’s first swear word…

YOU are a stay at home dad.

– If your wife has ever complained that you don’t keep the house clean enough…

YOU are a stay at home dad.

– If you have scheduled a playdate for your kids…

YOU are a stay at home dad.

– If you are reading this blog…

YOU are a stay at home dad.

I hope this clears things up a bit.
