Vasectomy Pain

I am planning on getting a vasectomy - first appointment with the urologist is tomorrow - but now that I am researching it I am starting to get cold feet over reports of severe and ongoing post vasectomy pain, granulomas and pressure.
Many of you have written candidly about having a vasectomy, but after the initial recovery period how much discomfort or other side effects have you experienced? Any resources you can point me to would be appreciated as well.

Income

I was just curious if any of you sahd's do some kind of home based business to contribute to the household income? I would feel better if my kids were able to stay out of daycare, but we can't afford to live on one income. I know there's a lot of options on the internet, mostly scams, so I wanted to know if any of you do have a business that is legitimate. Thank you!

Housedad for 18 years, now divorced

I love my daughter, but now I have a very limited, narrow opportunity to find employment. At 50, it's a challenge to find any job and with 18 years of being a housedad, people think its great that I did that, but no one will give me a job. I would suggest that housedads phase out of the job of raising baby about the time first grade rolls around, and get back into a carreer, so that you have a life 10 years later, versus being unemployed like myself!

Problems resuming marital activities after baby hiatus...

Well, my wife and I took the normal hiatus from marital activities (uhh...sex) during the last few months of her pregnancy, and during the first few months thereafter...and while we're still terribly busy and overwhelmed with our new baby, we're also trying to revive our sex life...which has given rise to a problem that I haven't experienced in, oh, fifteen years or so...I'm having problems...uhh...getting too excited, too fast.

My wife is in the double standard crowd. Should I be mad?

I stay at home with my 3 y/o daughter. Today, I was lamenting to my wife about how it can be frustrating to arrange social activities for our daughter. We were discussing how many moms have a double standard where they are perfectly willing to let their children be supervised by another mom but terrified of having them supervised by a fellow parent that happens to be a dad (who they may know equally well or better). Of course, everyone needs to get to know someone before sending their kid over.

To be or not to be a question for AHDs?

A little background. Not an AHD yet but the wife is a few months along now w/ our first. We're really excited, but expecting alot of work in the years to come as far as parenting goes. She is a school administrator, has smokin' benefits, and is the primary bread winner. I am a construction mngr and not too far behind salary-wise. We are playing w/ our budget to see if we can swing me staying home for awhile w/ the kid.

Bitter New Member

I have someone who is wants to join our local at-home dads group, but in the couple of emails that he has sent me, he has let me know that he has recently gotten divorced, his wife is a you know what and he is very, very angry with her. I feel like I have to let him in to the group, and I want to give support to a AHD that is struggling , but I am concerned that he is so angry that it will bring everyone else down, and I would not want to turn the group into his "complaining about his ex" sounding board.

Shaving question

Ok...I'm embarrassed to post this so that's why it's anonymous. Yes, this is a real question. My wife would like me to shave all the body/pubic hair once. She thinks it would be sexy. The couple of times I've shaved the chest hair, it itched like hell when growing back in and I ended up with a lot of ingrown hairs. It just wasn't good. I'm worried the same will happen with the pubic hair. And using a razor down there?

Do you think that the recent "sex toys" forum thread is appropriate for this site?

* Yes. It's entertaining, so why not?
* Yes, because it's a legitimate question
* No, because I think it's inappropriate for moral/religious/etc reasons
* No, because it's not on-topic about at-home dads. There are other sites for discussing sex toys.
* No, because parenting discussions and sex toy discussions don't mix well.

The big V?

Figured I'd try out this anonymous thing by asking about anyone's experiences with vasectomies. I'm 33, and have one child and my wife and I agree that we're OK with not having another one (I'm an only child, so it doesn't seem at all odd to me). Rather than her continue to take the pill I've been seriously thinking about getting a vasectomy........

Which best describes your opinion about the recent activity and posts on the site?

* I'm happy with the recent activity. Aside from a few exceptions, it's all good with me
* Things have gone downhill lately, because most/all of the discussion threads are more childish.
* Things have gone downhill lately, because the discussions have little to do with parenting issues.
* Things are about the same as they've been. I'm not too picky.

Peeing in front of your daughters

My daughter is not yet at an age where I can begin potty training, but she loves to explore the world. As a man, I proudly pee standing up any time the chance arrives (hands on hips and everything), but lately my daughter really seems like she wants to know what happens in the the ol' bathroom. She's really not old enough yet where I feel like I can close the door while peeing, but at the same time I don't really think it's appropriate for her to try to get a better view of the process either.

Don't know of a better way to ask this, so here goes:

Almost 4 year old son in serious "no" phase and driving me nuts. Need some advice.

My nearly 4 year old son is heavily in the "no" phase. Every instruction, is met with "no". Simple requests like "put that down" or get down off the chair please" are met with "no". And it's not that is the only word he knows. He thinks it's a game. I have spanked in the past, but only save that for the most serious of punishments.(Intentional injuring of someone or repeated defiance of something that has been timed out 3 or 4 times).

Movies in the Park this Wed night at Koz

The Chicago Park District is sponsoring several evening movies in the park this summer. Tomorrow (Wed, 15th) there will be an 8pm showing of Flushed Away at Kosciuszko Park 2732 N. Avers Ave

Koz Park link

Amanda and I plan on attending. We'd welcome the company if you, like me, are a bad parent who lets their kid stay up beyond their normal bedtime so they can absorb even more Hollywood crap.

New ChicagoDads.com site coming soon

Although this site has served us well for the past few years, it's time for something new. There are a number of reasons for this. The main ones are:

1) I need some more industrial strength spam-fighting tools
2) My time is limited so I need to consolidate my web management chores to the extent possible
3) To set up a framework that's going to be more flexible and maintainable for the future.
4) To address some technical issues with the current setup.

To that end, I plan to move ChicagoDads.com to a new location within the AtHomeDad.org website. The new site will look a little different but will:

-Still have the messages
-Still have the calendar
-Still have the same local focus
-Still have the ChicagoDads.com domain name

This move happen within the next few weeks.

As of now, I've created the start of the new site as a separate entity. I'd like you all to check it out, sign up for an account there, and generally put it through it's paces. Use it as you would this site to give it a test.

The new site is here:

http://www.athomedad.org/groups/chicagodads

IL Railway Museum

The Illinois Railway Museum is in Union IL, 60 miles west of Chicago. This is the place that hosts the "day out with Thomas" events in August.
I 'm planning on taking Oscar out there probably one of the weekends in July. Anyone else interested in going and maybe making a day out of it?
