Daytime TV Shows

OK, I'm bored. I know I'm not like most of you 'stay at home dads', since our son is now a senior in high school, and the only reason I stay at home is because of disability....
But anyways...what do you guys watch during the day? Daytime tv is horrible. I flip thru so many channels, and there's nothing on to watch (that I find interesting) so i wind up with the usual Price is right, jerry springer, ad nauseum.
Just curious what you all watch.

Sam

Nothing here

My daughter just turned 11 months old, so I've not seen a daytime TV program beyond the occasional mid-day news story in, well, over 11 months!

Ellen

My top advice to new Dads (and veteran Dads) is avoid daytime television like the plague it is. The worst is The View; it literally drives me bonkers to watch even a minute of it.

Morning shows are so gooberville super happy McFunsalot that those people should be shut down immediately.

I used to be a fan of Oprah because of her philanthropic shows and her odd fun shows, but those are few and far between these days. Rachel Ray is OK sometimes.

In my opinion, the only show worth watching is Ellen. She manages to be fun and philanthropic, and she makes every show interesting and personal.
She isn't fake like all the others, and that is about all I can ask from daytime personalities.

The Broadband Experience

Sam Kerby,
Welcome!
When my 4 YO is home, which is not that often, he has Disney and the kind on. When he is not at home, the TV is OFF; if I want to watch something when House of Mouse or Speed TV has motocross on, what I watch more than likely is news broadcasts with my Broadband Internet. You can also watch all the primetime drivel if you choose at your choosing, with a Broadband High Bandwidth connection. I also read A LOT. kind of an escape without leaving the couch, this might be an avenue for you if your disability permits. I would recommend anything written by Clive Cussler, but start on the first book of each series of his as each book references other written adventures in the plot line.

DVR or Netflix

If it's in your budget consider a DVR (if your cable/dish company provides one) or Netflix.
With a DVR you can have it record all the good shows at night when you're busy and then watch them at your leisure, (A DVR works different than a VCR, it's a LOT easier to find what you've recorded, plus its mostly automatic!)
Netflix.com or Blockbuster.com is great because you just click on your computer what you want to watch and it shows up in the mail a day or two later. Great way to catch up on old TV shows you never got around to watching the first time out. LOST is a lot better show on DVD when you can watch an entire season over a weekend without any commercials!

In regards to what I watch? Not much, I spend most of my free time on the computer.

Daytime tv

I highly recommend a tivo (dvr) as well, if it's in your budget. Being abl to control what commercials you watch (almost none!) is wondeful. Also, you can ape late night movies or whatever, and then they are there for you in the morning, no video tape necessary and easily programmed. We I usually leave the tv tuned to the food network or turner classic movies or discovery or the science channel during the day.

How about a good book?

No TV in our house, so I can't really answer the question...we do watch movies, however, and are big Netflix fans. On the rare occasion that I have free time for entertainment during the day at home (most of my daytime entertainment comes from the car radio as I run from school to gym to market to school to practice to neighbors house to pick up a kid etc), I generally turn to one of two sources: a good book, or I shut my eyes and watch the tv on the inside of my eyelids! :-) Ahhh, naps...but that's another thread!

Barns and Noble Classics

I have been trying to catch up on all the books I should have read in High School/College, so I printed out the B&N Classics list and are trying to knock "most" of them out. I just finished Count of Monte Cristo, and Three Musketeers (Dumas is right up there with Clancy for action and political intrigue) and I started on Sense and Sensibility, but I soon gave that up because it is every bit of a chic book and I found it pretty slow, so I started on Robinson Crusoe (which so far is awesome). I have high hopes because most of the books on the list are the "best sellers" from back in the day, so once you get past differences in language and pace, they really are there to entertain, and my wife and I do Blockbuster movies where we order the harder to get Sci-fi series Stargate, Battlestar Galactica (great show), and then use the Brick and Mortar store for the current series Lost, Deadwood. So that keeps our entertainment docket pretty full, but during the day the TV is generally off, or we watch DVDs, I found a long time ago that if we have cable mysteriously the house stays dirty, the lawn doesn't get mowed, and the kids end up eating out of a bucket set in the middle of the table, but I end up seeing "Point Break" about a hundred times, and I watch my all time FAVORITE show Wife Swap.

samkerby,

If you are going the record/watch route and you don't want to spend too much, you can get a TV card for your PC, run your cable throughit, and run an open source program called MediaPortal. This is a fully functional recorder, including programming thru local listings. It is in the early stages, but I have heard it is not buggy.

(I have a Media Center PC, which MS stopped supporting, and I plan on switching to this soon.)

Regarding Ellen, a few years ago I had surgery and needed physical therapy every day. Ellen was the only show on during my sessions and I could not stand it. I am pretty sure I healed quickly in large part due to the fact that I could not take that show any longer. :-)
