Dyson Vacuums

My wife has been wanting a Dyson Vacuum for years now and a month ago she caught our Hoover on fire somehow! (hmmm... she wanted a new fan for the basement right before it caught on fire too... ) Guess I better pay attention when she says she wants a new car!

Anyway, does anyone have one of these $600 suckers? If so, are they really any good and what kind do you have? We don't have a vacuum at all now and the popcorn kernels are piling high!

vacuuming rugs vs. hardwood floors

Kevin,

you know i have had Dyson envy for as long as i can remember. i'm slighty anal retentive and was a once-a-week-vacuumer before we had kids. now i abuse a shitty Dirt Devil twice a week and still feel like i'm never sucking anything up so i'm thinking hardwood floors instead of carpet.

and, much like lawn mowers, i awlays buy a $200-$300 vacuum/lawnmower it seems like every three years or so.

so i don't know anyone who has one but you know it's like getting a mac every decade to getting a pc every two years ;-)...

if you get one, let me know how it works out.
i'm dying to justify the cost; to wallow in my purchase power.

vacuum every two/three years or hardwood floors?

anyone want care to weigh in on the subject

Think of how that bass would sound in a "live" room!

We wanted a Dyson and were

We wanted a Dyson and were going to get one last year until my in-laws gave us a copy of consumer reports. It listed a Kenmore as #1 (bag) and #2 (bagless) and then I think something else and at #4 or 5 it was a Dyson. So, we got the bagged Kenmore #1. If interested I will get you the model #. No problems ao far, but its only a year old. I really like the dirt sensor on it. I go over and over the same place until the dirt sensor turns green. Had to do this a lot when we first got it (our other vacuum sucked). I only go over once now before it turns green.

Kev: not the car, you need to watch out when she starts talking about a new HOUSE! (Is your fire insurance current....?)

Dan: sounds like your last vacuum actually DIDN'T suck.... :-)

Dyson

We have a Dyson low reach (aka Tonka Truck) and I love it. It is very powerful and does an excellent job.

My wife doesn't care for it. One of her biggest complaints is the cord is too long.

hardwood floors

For a few more dollars I put hardwoods in our house and now I am the proud owner of a "SWIFFER" (9 bucks - not including refills).

Aye, there's nary an animal alive that can outrun a greased scotsman...

Kenmore

We got the Kenmore that Dirtilus mentioned above after reading the same Consumer Reports article and I absolutely love it. I'd been using a Shop-Vac to clean for a couple of years after our old $100 vacuum died- the dirt sensor on the Kenmore went crazy when I first used it (no beater bar/brush on my Shop-Vac).

We once had an in home

We once had an in home demonstration of the Kirby vacuum /rug steamer. They came, vacuumed all our rugs and then steam cleaned them for free. Meanwhile, they also tried to sell us this contraption for $2000.

Their main trick was to vacuum with our vacuum, then use theirs with a piece of white paper in the filter. So that they then had a tangible example of just how sad, vile and hopelessly filthy our vacuumed rugs were without the Kirby. Truly upsetting. The young salesman was very vivacious and engaging. Even after we ler him clean all our rugs and then told him we would not be buying the Kirby.

He continued to be very nice for the one hour it took him to pack up his stuff. In fact he was very nice right up until we refused the "special deal" he got his manager to offer us over the phone. Then he wouldn't really talk to us anymore.

Really awesome to have a surly salesman in your house who just spent 2 hours cleaning your rugs for free. Made me giggle.

Anyway, I relate that story because it caused us to do a ton of vacuum research. We came to the conclusion that the upright and or bagless vacuuns just weren't really worth the cash. The kenmore mentioned above sounds like the way to go to me.

Kenmore Cannister Vacuums Rule...

I too have a Kenmore bagged vacuum (cannister model). I was dreaming of a nice, new Electrolux cannister to replace my hand-me-down 50 year old 45# metal Electrolux cannister (a beautiful gold in color), but tried the Kenmore and came to believe it was lighter, quieter, better constructed, better performing, and less expensive. I've now had it for 2 years, and love it. It has onboard tool storage, is durable, and sucks more than any other vacuum I've ever used (shop vacs excluded). I looked at the dysons as well, but ended up deciding that a cannister vac was easier to use and more flexible.

Sidenote: Did the Kirby guy suck up a bowling ball? Oh, and have you ever tried vacuuming your carpet with your vacuum, changing the filter, and then vacuuming again? Funny--it has the same effect!

No, he didn't do the bowling

No, he didn't do the bowling ball trick. He did however convince us of the incredible killing power of dust mites, which immediately ledus to allow him to vacuum our couch and bed for free, too.

Well we bought one

Last week Target had a sale where you received a $100 gift card with a Dyson purchase. It seems to be an incredible piece of machinery.

With or Without Rotating Ignition Output

Would your megavacacuum be the Dyson DC15 Animal Vacuum powered by a HEMI with a Bored and Stroked Rotating Ignition Output Sequencer? Sorry guys... The Dyson looks pretty cool, but too bad I just got a Hoover Wind Tunnel with a Chopped Front End and a Self Locking Articulated Snapping Beater Bar, again sorry... Really, it's just cream in my coffee this AM! ;-)
All joking aside, My Wind Tunnel is an awesome display of no bag sucking!

Consumer Reports

Hi Guys Consumer Reports consistently rates the Dyson lower than many less expensive models. In Upright models the Dyson rates 6th blow two Kenmore models.

In canister models the Kenmore Progressive, also available in an upright version, rated a Best Buy. Not cheep at 3 Honey but man was it worth it. The easy of use the sound quality not to mention the many attachments and it’s pistol grip has helped make one of my least favorite tasks tolerable.

Be Seeing You.

We like ours a lot

Our Dyson does a very good job, is well engineered to allow access to any clog, performs better than any previous machine we have had. Of course for the money we spent on it, it should.

Basic Hoover works well

I clean apartment hallways for my part time gig. Most of this time is spent vaccuuming a good 10-12 hours a week. This includes three flights of stairs, so they take a beating. I've found that the basic Hoover bag upright commercial model from Home Depot is the best I've used. It's light, good suction, takes a beating and keeps on ticking. Runs around $100 or so. I bought a cheap, small cannister "Stinger" that I use for corners, edges and cobwebs. Bought it for $39.99 on sale at Home Depot and works well.

Vac Maintenance?

Other than emptying the bag and cutting off the little strings that get wound around the brush, is there anything you guys do to as preventive maintance? I inherited a pretty nice Hoover 12 amp wind tunnel, I know this thing should suck more (insert Bevis and Butthead Laugh here).

That depends Uke

How handy are you? I've always been a "tear it apart to see how it works guy" and as such, I've never been afraid to grab a screwdriver and go at it when something isn't working. Hoses get clogged quite easily. Two plus years of sucking up cat hair and litter by my wife caused mine to die many times. Nothing a simple tear down and inspection didn't fix.

But now it's good and dead. Not worth what it's cost me in parts to fix it. I'm probably going to pull the trigger on a Dyson.

I am half good

I kick ass at taking stuff apart, the putting back together.....
I am reasonably handy, but I have more of a carpenter background than an electrician background so there are times that that intimidates me, and with the New Year's resolution of getting out of the credit card debt this year, I am a little wary of tearing into the only working vacuum in the house, but I think I will go on www.Freecycle.org (for those of you who don't Freecycle, it is like the free Craigslist), see if I can find a backup and then tear into it.

I can field strip my Dyson with my eyes blindfolded.

I've traded out the whole bottom assembly. I gotta dog who's hair on her butt is 12 inches long and I can go through parts in about a year. I order belts 3 at a time and 2 brushes. The dyson is by far the easiest to work on...Now my mothers Kirby no f---in way will I go near that bohemian.

My Kirby is Better than all your vacuums!

We've purchased vacuum after vacuum for the 7 1/2 years my wife and I have been married-I have probably spent about 700-1000 dollars on vacuums! We bought a Kirby and it's awesome...and it has a lifetime warranty! It beats Dyson or any other vacuum based on my experiences!

If cia is correct

Then the Dyson is for me. As it is I'm having a hard enough time justifying $400-500 for a vacuum, but $1000 for a Kirby? No spank you.
