UPDATE:
Class was cancelled last week so I had to wait until this week to turn in the assignment. I got 100% on it. I also recieved bonus points (towards my midterm score) for presenting it infront of the class, and extra bonus points for having done the survey of you all, and finding the costs to place the ad in the top voted magazines.

SO, Thanks to all of you who helped with this!!!!

ORIGINAL POST:
I'm taking and advertising class at the local community college. I have to create a print ad that would be in a magazine. I created an ad for the annual at-home dad's convention. Image link is at the bottom of the post.

What I need to know from you guys, my target market, WHAT MAGAZINES DO YOU, THE AT HOME DAD, (and your spouses) READ AND OR SUBSCIBE TO? I need as many answers as I can get by Sunday (9/30) as I can get.

Thanks!!

Maybe helps

I don't think that High Times Counts, so...

The only publications that I receive are The Nation, Free Inquiry, and Wood Magazine (woodworkers mag).

(I know ... CRAZY Liberal)

Hard to pin down

SAHDs are as diverse of a group as you can get.

I only get fishing mags -- Florida Sportsman and Saltwater Sportsman.

I also read PTO Today and the occasional Family Fun, but FF and others are the same BS over and over if you've been looking at them long enough.

It may be worth looking at commonality among the wives and what they read instead, but then you might have to alter the ad.

My wife reads O and Real Simple and Rachel Ray and one other 500 page ad-o-matic waste of trees that I can't recall.

I hear Rebel Dad likes 'Parenting'.

I like Vixen Extremes X-word puzzle

For me,
Wood (Wood-working, not in the same category as the publication's in Tim's Post)
Entertainment Weekly
American Rifleman

My Wife,
National Pornographic,oops Geographic,
Discover
Rotarian

The Kids
Highlights (Not to be confused with the periodical in paddyrat's post, although when I was looking for the subscription I found out the HighLIFE is a publication very close in content to High Times)

Hope that helps,

Maybe...

It should read WHAT MAGAZINES DID YOU, THE AT HOME DAD, (and your spouses) READ AND OR SUBSCIBE TO 10 YEARS AGO? The answers would then be interesting!

Mags

I read most of my trash online.

My wife buys "Real Simple." I will pick it up and look at it. A few years ago it was true to its name, but now it's like all the other women's 30-something mags of yesteryear.

I receive "American Legion," but I seldom read it. It's a little too conservative. I receive a quarterly mag called "Arts & Crafts Homes." When we lived in Massachusetts, I received "Yankee," although I cringed at the title, since I grew up south of the Mason-Dixon. Finally, we receive "Columbus Monthly." Most major cities have a magazine devoted to the city. This would probably be your best bet for an advertisement that will reach your target audience of moms and dads. We also subscribed to "Boston" magazine when we lived there.

My boys get "Ladybug Magazine" and "National Geographic Little Kids."

So, here's the recap:

Real Simple,
American Legion,
Arts & Crafts Homes,
Yankee,
Boston,
Columbus Monthly,
Ladybug, &
National Geographic Little Kids.

We get Real Simple, Vegetarian Times, Fortean Times, and Mental Floss.

I like your ad, BTW.

Mags

I'm new to this group, but its good to know that these magazines are all being "read" for the articles. Between all the magazines my kids get I barely glance at the one mag I enjoy Business 2.0, but strictly because of the pictures.

Used to be more but now

Used to be more but now it is

Real Simple
MacWorld
Better Homes & Gardens
Chicago Magazine
Time Out Chicago
Chicago Tribune
National Geographic Little Kids
Ladybug
Highlights
Food and Family (Kraft Foods)

(seems like a lot...used to be more?)

I used to get Cooking Light, but cancelled that one. Over half that magazine is actually health and beauty tips for women and the other half was recipes that aren't very kid friendly or easy to do before soccer or baseball practice.

When I have time to read

My list is very short: because I read most of the time online.

Mothering
Wild Animal Baby
C&EN (Chemical & Engineering News)
Linux format (British)
IS (Internationale samenwerking, Dutch magazine)

Sometimes I get a copy of National Geographic, and maybe I'm gonna get a subscription to The Economist.

Cost per ad

So far between here an another board, Time Magazine is winning as the most subscribed to. Did you know, that a single page, color ad, national published, one run ad in time magazine costs: $241.350. That's for one ad.

The most expensive of any of the ads I've found so far is Reader's Digest at $ 268,900.

You all have been a big help with this, thank you.

NY Times Magazine

That's the only one I can read during the week, and I forgot to write it down.
Whoa!! It is really expensive!!!!
But if you have the chance to put your ad in that magazine, the section I like to read, and the ones I really look at, are: On language, Consumed, The Ethicist and The Strip. So if your ad is in the same page or on the close one, I will for sure notice it.

This sound a little bit egocentric, but I think is the way I can help you to have the better impact.

What about "local newspapers"? Most of the big and medium size cities have at least one, and I guess they are, by far, cheaper than the times.

Thank you all.

Guys,

Thank you all for your help. I have my assignment ready to turn in tonight. I have never looked forward to homework so much in my life.

The outcome is this. With 33 responses, 91 different magazines read/subscribed. Real Simple ranked the highest, follwed by Time, Wired, Entertainment Weekly, Newsweek, ESPN the Magazine, Parenting, Everyday with Rachel Ray, Highlights for Children, and then some sort of computer magazine (PC world, Mac World, etc...)

As mentioned above Time was the most expensive of the top ten, at 241,350 for a one run, national print, standard edition. Reader's digest was the most expensive of all of the responses at 268,900.

When I get the grade on the assignment, I'll post it. Thanks again for all your help. And if any of you want to use that ad with your groups feel free to post it before the convention.
