Mowing your yard

As I'm watching my girls this morning, I'm looking out the window at my yard trying to decide if I need to mow or not. This got me thinking about that, and I'm wondering how y'all are in other regions.

A few questions for you!
1) How often do you mow your yard?
2) What is your mowing season (what month to what month)?
3) Do you mow your yard yourself, or have someone do it for you?

If you don't have a yard (you live in an apartment) just share that too!

In Houston, Texas, I have to mow my yard at least once a week. I'll typically start mowing around May, give or take a few weeks. I'll mow through October for sure, sometimes mowing into November or December (though the later mows are mostly to keep the leaves mulched and less to cut tall grass). It's still in the 90s and mid 80s right now, and won't get cool enough to stifle the grass growth for several more weeks.

I'm wondering about the rest of y'all. I heard Minnesota was expecting their first freeze/snow of the year around September 14th or so! Crazy!

Lawn Mower Man

Well, I used to mow my lawn myself, but this year, we made the choice to spend a few bucks in the name of quality family time and have someone do it. It wasn't an easy choice for me at first because I actually enjoy lawn care. I'd strap on my iPod shuffle and pick the direction I was going to mow that week and off I'd go. When I was finished, I'd open up a cold beer and look over the beautiful lawn that was mine and mine alone! But after the first few times that "Sunrise Landscaping" did our lawn, I realized it was a great choice. We were so busy with little league, going to the pool for swim lessons, vacations and other fun activities that I knew mowing the lawn would keep getting pushed back until the grass was way too long. At first they mowed it shorter than I liked it, but I asked the to do it a bit longer and they obliged. Now, every week, it gets done and my yard looks fantastic and healthy.

It has been an experiment that has seemed to work, however, as my kids get older, I will go back to doing it myself. Why cheat myself from an experience I so enjoy, right? But, in the meantime, it has worked out for all of us.

1) How often do you mow your yard?
It gets done weekly
2) What is your mowing season (what month to what month)?
Late April-Late October, but depends on what the season(s) have been like.
3) Do you mow your yard yourself, or have someone do it for you?
I hire somebody

It is about time to aerate for the fall. Yeah, I'll have them do that too.

DIY - for now...

Hi there,
I'm over in Katy, and I'm still mowing, but have just gone down to every 2 weeks instead of weekly now. I've been doing it myself for the last 3 years - every now and then I decide I'm going to get a yard service in, but for one reason or another i'm never quite happy with what they do so after a few weeks I go back to doing it myself...I find I can get ahead of problems that way, and see what is going on in the yard that may need attention. We have a deal that my wife takes the kids out somewhere fun for a couple of hours on either a saturday or sunday morning, and I get to do whatever needs doing in the yard in that time. It works pretty well both ways. If you told me 10 years ago that one day I would be looking forward to some mindless peace and solitude walking along behind a lawnmower I'd have said you were crazy LOL

Lowered Expectations

I always thought that my wife would find mowing the yard sexy and want to jump my bones- you know, cause of the smell of sweaty grass and gasoline (very manly). When we bought our first house last year, I was grinning ear to ear when I first mowed the lawn. Unfortunately, she doesn't go for the smell of clorophyl and unleaded. Mowing the lawn isn't nearly as fun anymore.

I have no idea when I'm supposed to mow it now that Al Gore's prophecies are killing the polar bears... and my grass. Half the grass is dead, and the rest is growing in patches. Very confusing how to handle that.

What?? You Mean??

You can hire out to get the yard done? Just kidding, mowing the lawn is one of the few places I can go kid free and I really enjoy the "quiet" down time. In reference to the questions... 1) I mow weekly 2) May to October 3) Ya baby, it's all me! I don't like to share.
Then the snow comes... 1) I shovel as needed according to accumulation, 2) October to June, 3) It's my shovel and I will share.

Mowing

1) How often do you mow your yard?
I should mow weekly, but it seems I don't get to it as often as I should. It has turned out that I mow about once every three or four weeks.
2) What is your mowing season (what month to what month)?
April to October
3) Do you mow your yard yourself, or have someone do it for you?
I mow and love it. I just wish I had more time to take care of it. Next season...

Oh, THAT's what you're supposed to do with that green stuff...

:-) I gave up that task many years ago...it's some of the best money we spend each summer! The lawn gets mowed once per week by a lawn crew that does a full cut & blow dry in 20 minutes. In the early and late season (April and November) it only gets mowed once or twice, but from May through Oct. it's every week.

My follow on question...for those of you who have a lawn service, what do you pay per mow?

- Andy

Mow?

I wish I could mow.
Northern Kentucky is in an extreme drought and I haven't mowed in 3 months. I miss it a lot. All of us on our street just gave up on our lawns this year...we were watering everyday for hours, but it was still too hot & too dry. A bunch of us decided to throw in the towel together and try to hope for rain next year and spend the money we are saving from watering to have lawns treated, with the hopes they bounce back.

When our Kentucky Bluegrass does grow I usually mow our once every 6 days at 3 1/2 inches. It looks amazing.

Lawn Service

We rent our house so there is a lawn service that comes by and cuts it. I'm thinking about asking the landlord if he will buy a mower and let me cut it since the service doesn't come by enough so my kid has to play in tall nasty grass and I just don't like they way the yard looks when they are done.

This year I have been living

This year I have been living with a roommate at his house. We try our best to share the responsibilities pretty much on everything, so I figured I'd wait to let him cut the grass at 'his' house first before I jumped in the mix. Well it is now the end of summer and he didn't cut it once. Our front yard is really shady so the grass never once looked bad, but the back yard, WOW. It has now been cut, but I can't believe what it looked like. There really was only one spot that looked real bad because the back is shady too. I didn't really care though, I think that our dogs kind of liked it. They probably thought they had found a new land or something. My son and I never really went out there, we usually just go to the park if we want to play. So, my mowing season didn't last a single day this year (lucky me), we were trying to revert some of the global warming that we've contributed by allowing our grass to grow naturally. Theres a thought. If everyone would just let there grass grow freely, it would have a great impact on the global warming efforts. Right?

Plant a tree, and let your grass grow free.
Thats my new slogan.

I use an electric mower

Just more food for thought, I use an electric mower and weed eater. The cost is pennies for electricity, and I never have to buy gas or oil. Additionally, I'm not running a combustion engine either, so that's my part for global warming, callygull ;-)

I don't pay to have mine mowed cause I'm a cheap guy. I would love that extra time to spend with the fam, but I can't swing the cost. It's usually about $20 or so around here. Most houses use a team of 2-3 guys to knock it out in minutes. They haul their trucks up and down the street and do several houses on the same day.

Also as I think about it, I'm pretty sure this year I'll be mowing into November if not December. Also South Texas RARELY sees snow!

UGGHHH!

Going a little off subject; it was snowing this morning (10-14-2007) on the high plain serengeti of Colorado south of Denver. No accumulation yet, just light flakege, but then again it's not dark yet either. Time to dust off the snow gear and shovels!

Mow-a-Matic

Before I had kids I always wanted to tie a string to my self-propelled mower to a stake in the middle of the yard and tie the handle down to see if it turns into a Mow-a-matic! With kids and lots of shrapnel, I don't think this will ever happen. I do have a fenced-in-yard.

    FYI

Tonight was hopefully my last mow of the season, it took care of most of the fallen leaves, but many are yet to fall. I have been down to a every other week or so mow as of late.
The S word is in the forecast again last I heard, but the forcast changes faster than I can execute a Pampers full of bad stinks!
You got your good manageable stinks, you know what I'm talking about here. Then you got your, well you know, it goes everywhere and wrecks your best golf shirt till you wash it.

    I haven't mowed in about 2

I haven't mowed in about 2 weeks, and looking at my lawn you can really tell. Here in western Wisconsin I mow from April to Octoberish. In the spring / fall I should be mowing about twice a week, but it doesn't usually get done. I have an infant and a toddler at home and can't mow unless mom is home. That usually leaves the weekends and we did a lot of camoing this summer. So my lawn only got mowed about 3 to 4 times a month.

    Cutting the grass

Okay, I know I'm not exactly your typical guy but I hate doing lawn work; HATE it! I really don't understand you guys who find that relaxing. Did I mention I hate doing it? LOL! Oh, and I'm in Michigan.

    1) How often do you mow your yard?
every other week to once a week depending on the amount of rain we've had

    2) What is your mowing season (what month to what month)?
usually starts in May and goes until about October (although sometimes slightly into November just to mulch the leaves

    3) Do you mow your yard yourself, or have someone do it for you?
the neighbor owns a lawn care and snowplowing service so we have him do both for us

    4) What do you pay?
$25 a time which is cheap for around here
