Hi everyone,
I'm a new user and familiar with Chicago Dads. I write for Chicago Parent and have pitched an article idea about Chicago Dads specifically, but the more research I do on Athomedad.org, the broader the scope of the article is becoming.
I spoke with webmaster Mike (congrats on the new baby!) and would include an interview with him about the technical side of organizing and running these two sites. I want to know from y'all:
1. how you use the sites to help with your parenting/sanity?
2. what has Chicago Dads/Athomedad given you that you hadn't had before?
3. how do local playgroups work and what is the success rate, if such a term can be applied to a playgroup?
4. how active are you in the online community?
5. what would you like more of from the site?
6. Does anyone else fantasize about an eight-hour block of sleep?
7. ChicagoDads, any ideas /proposals for the next play group
Any other thoughts or questions please email me at dufferrt@yahoo.com.
I'll be checking the posts on the site over the next few days.
Thanks for reading and possibly, responding.
Does anyone else smell breast milk when there's no breast milk around?

Article for Chicago Parent

Dufferrt,
Welcome to the group. You should post this on the Chicago Dads group section of this website and you'll probably get more feedback. Also, the groups of Chicagodads often meet informally during the week at museums, farmers markets, etc. I'm sure you'd get a taker (or three) for a Friday playdate if you posted in that section. I'd love to come but we just moved away from Chicago. :-(
Have you met Howard yet? His son is about the same age as yours and he's a writer as well.
Good luck,
Jim

Good call Jim, to post at the ChicagoDads section. You'll find a fine group of guys there!
I had done an interview/article with ChicagoParent back in June of 2004. It was for the Father's Day issue that they chose to actually feature something about at-home dads. The article was written by a journalism student from NU that attended the convention in 2003 and it was picked up by ChicagoParent.
They sent a photographer to our house later for a few photos. Would you believe that the photog actually had specific instructions to get shots of me diapering my infant daughter!?!? How fu@#ed up is that? Like, let's get proff he can actually do it?
I'd like to think that they have progressed in the last three years and now recognize at-home dads as "Parents" and safe to be featured in their magazine more often than just be given the token father's day nod. To actually live up to their name and feature both sides of parenting all the time. Otherwise, you might as well just call it ChicagoMother.
So, kudos to you to help them put at-home dads in the faces of thousands of readers and enroll them into the ideas and possibilites that at-home dads are for real and a force, if you will, in parenting. To help change the general consensus from thinking that the gender roll should have the mom be primary caregiver is archaic. To be the voice of many of us saying we're for real.
Anyway...what was I saying? Oh yeah...I hope to meet you sometime at a ChicagDads DNO. I am out in the suburbs, but will travel in to vist with the group when I can.
Take care!
