We are beginning talks with Santa regarding a new bicycle for our 4 year old this Christmas. He will be 4 1/2 when the big day arrives. Obviously, we will be looking at models with training wheels.

Any advice on brands, models, styles and sizes? Which ones get the most hype from the little guys in your neighborhood? It seems like he might grow out of the smallest ones rather quickly.

Don't Get

A bike with hand brakes. gears, a horn or anything that could distract them from the task at hand, and that is to PAY ATTENTION and hold on! I've gotten two bikes w/training wheels from garage sales for a gand total of 5 dollars American! What I'm saying is, there are a ton of quality toddler bikes out there for sale cheap. Don't buy new!
Bike1 had 12 inch tires and bike 2 had 14 inch tires and he cruises and crashes on two wheels now.
Get a helmet for them and if you ride get one for you as well, lead by example. We're on helmet 3 now because the first 2 got damaged in crashes. It's cheap insurance for a happy biking experience without tears. No helmet, no biking, he knows and wears it making it trendy on the block.
Stay away from the motorcycle looking bikes, the neighbor has one and likes my son's BMX style better and is always wanting to trade.
