Being raised by Dad will make kids stupid

According to a study by a WOMAN, fathers appear not to provide the same quality of intellectual stimulation to their young sons as the children's mothers do.

You can read about it here and here (PDF)

Hogwash!

I don't think her research means squat on this side of the pond. I mean really, boys who spend at least 2.15 hours a day on average with their dads really do worse in school?

Maybe they are teaching them stuff from the Ministry Of Silly Walks instead of Itsy Bitsy Spider?

Hooray More Studies!

A study was preformed at Harvard of all places, brefore the Civil War, to prove that humans with dark skin that is from Africa, once more the group of people in slavery in the U.S., were a different species than homosapien. Oddly enough a totaly biased study from a prestigious university discoverd that the evadance was all in and African-American were not human.

This is the same kind of claptrap. Gavin de Becker (Fear Less, Protecting the Gift, The Gift of Fear) writes that any study done by people in white coats makes the media as if it were a compleet 20 year unbiased study. We all know that isn't true. Preliminary findings of all sorts are published and hyped as "fact" when they aren't.

Besides, this is more man bashing. Why aren't women attacked in similar ways when they are at the work place?

I found this comment about the study on Fark.com, where I found the original story.

Quote:
The Rules for Academic Research on the Subject of Genetic or Gender Differences:

Rule 1: Research is acceptable if it compliments a protected group. For example, a research finding that says women's brains are better at communication, or organization, or whatever - is acceptable.

Rule 2: Research is acceptable if it slams men. For example, saying that men make their children stupid - that's good science!

However, if you suggest that men's brains are better wired for understanding spacial relationships, and that this is why more men study engineering in college - well then, you have violated both rules 1 and 2. That is not acceptable (and if you happen to be a president of a university, it will cost you your job).

If you suggest that children raised only by their mother, with no positive *male* role models, may be worse off, well then you've violated rule 2. We can't have that.

See Rebel Dad

There has been a lot about this on Rebel Dad. He asked Aaron at the University of Texas to take a look at it as well. Also read the comments that people have posted in response to Rebel Dad's blogs. http://www.rebeldad.com

Please note that there are some serious politics involved surrounding this issue in the UK. There is no doubt that this government funded study has an agenda attacking it from both sides and possibly driving it. The politics I mentioned above include possible legislation regarding paternity leave and some of the same old squabble regarding family allowances (kind of like welfare). Again, see the links on RebelDad. Those links are also at the bottom right side of this web site.

Fathers' care harms boys' intelligence

Honestly, haven't we got better things to do than repeat on this site what already appears on Rebeldad? Are we really that concerned about UK SAHDs? I've read the Guardian many times, I've been to Bristol and dare I say it I'm even English; in summary, NEWSFLASH: - I wouldn't put it past the dads in Bristol. Sorry!

Peter.

Read the paper

http://www.bris.ac.uk/Depts/CMPO/workingpapers/wp175.pdf
It doesn't say "Being raised by Dad will make kids stupid". It does say that for boys (not girls) aged 2 and 3 being cared for by Dad (for more than 15 hours a week) results in the child being less well prepared academically for school. But it also says that boys cared for by Dad are better behaved behaviorally for school and it says a number of other positive things about Dad's involvement in their children's care.
I don't think much of the study but I dislike the kneejerk - "it must be a politically motivated and biased if it can in any way be construed as critical of Dads - after all it was written by a WOMAN" defensive reaction even more.
I can see why the Daily Mail or RebelDad would want to sexup a dreary academic article but do we really have to care?

Custody Argument In Disguise

Being someone who went through a bitter custody battle, I thought I 'd point out that fathers should be concerned by these absurd studies because, god forbid you ever end up in a divorce situation, these are the type of studies you will have to defend yourself against. And since a study like this results in huge attorney fees, the courts "love" to perpetuate these type of arguments against fathers (i.e. it prolongs the custody battle). I don't know much about the author but it wouldn't surprise me if she is involved in some way with the divorce industry in the UK.

what about kids making parents dumb?

really.

since i've been at home my vocabulary has been reduced, i've sunk back into toddler-like motor skills after one too many games of chutes and ladders and don't nearlt read as much as i'd like to.

and when i do pick up something to read and it's not about hoppin' on pop or which-what-who's i get confused...

ah, notice that last rhyming couplet!
