I read this one while wifey was pregnant and came across it today in my back room downstairs. All I remember about it was the fact I almost peed in my pants when I read it...I'm gonna read it again when I can find time....

Sometimes

When I'm not writing, cooking, vacuuming, doing laundry, editing photos, playing with the boy, missing the girl, fixing the multitude of broken things around the house, or any of the other eleventy billion things I do on a daily basis, yeah I do. Current read "Linux for Dummies Desktop Reference."

I'm a geek.

I'm currently reading "An Ocean of Air: Why the wind blows and other mysteries of the atmosphere" by Gabrielle Walker. The history of the science of air might not sound too interesting, but the author really adds a dimension of human interest and fascinating facts about the discoveries of air and the scientists behind those discoveries.

I also just finished "On the Trail of Assassins" by Jim Garrison. That's the non-fictional account of Louisana's district attorney following a trail of clues toward the possible conspirators who plotted the assassination of JFK. The account is compelling when told from Garrison's paranoid perspective, but I plan on reading Case Closed by Gerald Posner for the skeptical side of the story.

Reading?

What is this reading you guys are talking about?
Actually, I read stuff on the internet daily, but as far as books, not so much anymore.
I flip through Newsweek on Tuesday nights, Magnet magazine when it comes in the mail and I have two books looking at me from the holidays, "Come to Think of It" by Daniel Schorr and "Dadditude" by Philip Lerman. I'll get to those sooner or later.

Lately

I've been able to read 2 1/2 books in the last 2 months! When my 8 mo old is sleeping I pick up my book. It's important for my 2 1/2 yr old to see me reading to myself, so I try and read while she is around. I ask her to play with her cars or kitchen or something. She usually will for a few minutes at a time. I'd prefer to be able to read for longer periods of time, but she is 2. I'm grateful for the few minutes I do get.
I am no geek. Only sci-fi, fantasy, spy, conspiracy theory books for me. Currently reading The Dark River by John Twelve Hawks. It's the second book in a trilogy. The first is called The Traveler. It's pretty hard-core conspiracy reading. The vast machine controls everything. We are constantly monitored...that sort of thing.
Best book written...Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card

healthy reading

In total agreeance with Matt the Squirell, having my daughter see me reading (especially books with no pictures) is super important to our household. And since taking Olivia to the Library once a week is part of our routine, we both can load up on books to keep us occupied in our "downtime". If reading to your kids isn't in your daily routine, DO IT NOW!!! We've been reading to Olivia since we brought her home from the Hospital and she definately has a strong appreciation for books and reading. For me, I read mostly on the john, before bed and sometimes while Olivia naps. It's tough to find the time to read while Olivia is up and 'attem (mostly because she wants to know where the pictures are in "Daddy's Book"...) I read mostly whatever catches my eye at the Library, but lately it was Richard Dawkins "The God Delusion" and Al Gore's "The Assault on Reason", after both of those I'll wander back to some good crime fiction (maybe Elmore Leonard's newest)

Sorry Matt, I already have a set of fundamentalist In-laws that I have a hard time talking to...

P.S. Don't mention anything to your In-laws about other AHD's you meet on this site and their way of parenting (especially Heathen Pinkos like me) it only leads to more condemnation on their part.

They are actually quite supportive. At first they were not, but they kept their mouths shut. As time past, they saw how well it was working for us and have become very involved with us. They know not to talk religion or politics with us, so it's cool.

Nice Thread!!!

I just this last week got a wild hair to go back and revisit "Heir to the Empire" by Timothy Zahn (Oh yes, it is a Star Wars Novelization) so you all know I am flying my geek flag high. With my three helpers, just about the only time I get to read is after everyone goes to bed, although sometimes I will break it out during breakfast as well, and Tick thanks for the mention about "An Ocean of Air" that sounds like it is just my wife's taste in geekness.

Currently Reading

I make sure to find the time to read a little bit everyday. Currently I'm reading Scout's Honor by Peter Applebome. Next will be Peter and the Secret of Rundoon by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. This is the last in a trilogy that tells the story of how Peter Pan became who he is. I also love listening to books on tape/CD. This is mostly while driving. Currently I'm listening to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling (I had already read it but it's fun to listen to it being read too).

I love Timothy Zahn!! Best Star Wars books that were written.

dkremers_1965-- I used to listen to books all the time in the car, but as Lindsay got older I had to quit. The books I was choosing aren't very appropriate for her. I do miss it though. You should try Christopher Moore on CD. Very funny writer. Great for the car.

Burn 'em!!!

Regarding "God Delusion"- YOU FILTHY HEATHEN!
Regarding "The Assault on Reason"- YOU PINKO COMMIE BASTARD!

On that note, I'll recommend "Parenting Beyond Belief: on raising ethical, caring kids without religion" by Dale McGowan. I got it for Christmas- ironically enough. It's basically a guide for atheist parents.

Born Standing Up

I have some eclectic reading tendencies. I just finished Nicola Barker's "Wide Open," which had been sitting around my house for years because I read something that compared her with Nick Hornby, who I love. She's far, far weirder than anything Nick Hornby has written, but if you like a book whose main characters are an escaped murderer with alopecia, a homeless man who likes to "reclaim" things from a subway lost and found, a wild boar farmer's wife and her daughter who "sacrifices" chickens, and a fat, balding pornographer, all of whom come together in a remote village in England, then this is your book!

I also recently read Steve Martin's memoir, "Born Standing Up," and it was great. Currently, I'm reading "What Just Happened?", which is a book about a producer in Hollywood who made the Ethan Hawke/Gwyneth Paltrow version of "Great Expectations," Alec Baldwin and Anthony Hopkins' "The Edge," "Fight Club", and a number of other films that were only moderately successful. It's about how artistic success is often viewed as failure in Hollywood, which is why we're consistently bombarded with movies like "License to Wed" and "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry."

I've got a bit of geekiness in me as well (if you call having watched the director's cuts of all of the "Lord of the Rings" movies several times "geeky" rather than "supercool," which is how I refer to myself...). I recently read "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" by Phillip K. Dick, which is the book that "Blade Runner" is loosely based on. Really great stuff. And then I read "The Golden Compass," and I honestly can't see what all of the fuss is about. I'll probably read the other two, because I'm a compulsive completist, but it didn't have the same kind of magic as "LOTR," the Narnia books, or even the Harry Potter books, in my opinion...

Slam! by Nick Hornby

FYI - For fathers of kids who are approaching their teen years, I'd highly recommend you have them read "Slam!" by Nick Hornby. It's about a teenage boy who gets his girlfriend pregnant and they keep the baby. It definitely portrays the unglamorous realities of teenage pregnancy, and is probably a great deterrent to teen sex...

Umm...remind me to keep my daughter away from your son...

MY FAVORITE SCENEs FROM "UNCLE BUCK"
Buck: The guy's a predator and you're his prey.
Tia: Really?
Buck: You bet.
Tia: And how would you know?
Buck: When I was his age, I was a guy zooming girls like you. Pretty face, good chip on your shoulder.
Tia: I recommend you say out of my personal life!
Buck: Do your parents stay out of your personal life?
Tia: They don't know my personal life.
Buck: Have they met twiddle-dink?
Tia: His name is Bug.
Buck: [chuckles] First or last?
Tia: First!
Buck: What's his last name, Spray?
Tia: You should talk, Buck!

[Buck's beat-up old car pulls up]
Bug: Ever hear of a tune-up? Hee hee hee hee hee.
Buck: Ah, heh heh heh. Ever hear of a ritual killing? Ah, heh heh heh heh heh
Bug: I don't get it.
Buck: You gnaw on her face in public like that again and you'll be one. Ah, heh heh heh heh!

His Dark Materials

Reading is an essential part of my news through the internet and entertainment because I don't really watch television besides sporting events, movies from netflix, or sesame street. Usually done during naps or before bed.

Just finished reading the trilogy His Dark Materials. (first one is the golden compass) Like alenaspoppa I didn't think it had the magic and also didn't deserve all the atheist crap that it's getting. When in doubt and too lazy to travel out of the house for a book, I read Dean Koontz. My wife is a huge fan and they're growing on me. Just read Brother Odd (the third in that series) and have started By the light of the Moon.

I also love Jon Krakauer (except Under the Banner of Heaven, I couldn't finish due to the subject matter)

I Just Got

The latest and greatest WEB Griffin's The Shooters and the Clive Cussler new read, The Chase. Both are great "series" authors. db, was it you who also was into the Clive books? These are not books to read to the kids, but great "dad books" fiction based on history.

UNCLE BUCK!!!!

and here I thought I was the only one who liked that movie, and yep I am a Clive Cussler guy, although I have to admit that I like his earlier books better than his later (read Co-authored) material. A series that my wife and I have really enjoyed that a)takes no higher brain function to read, and b)was suggested to me by a fellow sahd (thank you Kace) was the Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum Series (One for the Money, Two for the Whatever). For real bubble gum entertainment the work pretty well, and a smokin' fast read.

For all you readers out there, if you haven't heard of PBS it might be worth your while to check it out.

Books

I still read comics. Once or twice a month I head over to Rocketship on Smith Street and get my titles pulled. Love that Batman, and they only take about 20 min to read and I get to look forward to another next month.

I am also reading "The Secret Life of Houdini," and just finished "The Assasination of Jesse James bythe Coward Robert Ford."

Be Seeing You.

More To Add

Hey Matt, what books by Christopher Moore do you recommend? I'll probably grab a couple from the library next time I'm in there.

I also love the books A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens (read it and watch it every year) and The Five People You Meet In Heaven by Mitch Albom.
My favorite kids' author is Beverly Cleary -- I love the Ramona and Henry Huggins books. And even though they aren't great writing, I still love my collection of Hardy Boy Books by Franklin W. Dixon.

Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff and
You Suck
I started Fluke on CD but had to stop cause its not very child appropriate.
Very funny stuff. I listened to Lamb on CD (not when the kids were around) and laughed my ass off. If you are very hard-core in your religious beliefs, I don't recommend it though. It can ruffle some feathers.

re: You Suck

Before reading "You Suck" by Christopher Moore, you should read "Bloodsucking Fiends." "You Suck" is the sequel, and you'll get more out of it if you read "Fiends" first.

Older fave

If anybody is into memoirs, "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" by Dave Eggers is...well, a heartbreaking work of staggering genius! Both of his parents died within 3 months of each other and he was left to raise his 13 year old brother. The book is astounding, as is most everything else Dave Eggers has written.

I'll also plug a friend of mine who happens to an author I looked up to for 10 years before having the opportunity to correspond with him and become friends. If you haven't heard of William Browning Spencer, I'd suggest going to Amazon.com and looking him up right now. Go!

My Latest Reads

The last two books that I managed to read were "The Selfish Gene" by Richard Dawkins and "The Hot Zone" by Richard Preston. If you are interested in scientific theories at all, you owe it to yourself to read anything written by Richard Dawkins. "The Hot Zone" was definitely a terrifying read considering that the Ebola virus - already quite dangerous - could become the deadliest virus ever to make contact with man with slight mutations. Now that I got a couple of scientific books out of the way, my next read is a fluff piece - the latest book in the Halo book series. After that, I would really like to read the sequel to "The Selfish Gene" - "The Extended Phenotype".

Yep, I'm a geek, too! ;-)

- Randy
