At what age (did you/do you want to) take your kid to their first live sporting event?

I've been going back and forth about taking my daughter to a hockey game locally. On the downside, the past few times the Red Wings have come to town it's been a night game, and I feel like I should actually respect the bedtime, even if it's one of the 2 most important nights of the year. On the other, I don't want to wait until the Wings are in town on a weekend for an afternoon game. On the third hand I don't want to take her to just any old Sharks game; I don't like the Sharks unless I've been drinking too much.

So, what have you guys done, or what do you plan/hope to do to get your kids to their first event? Also, what do you think I ought to do?

Be a shoe.

Just do it.

We went to every hockey game while we were waiting for Butters. Butters was born three weeks early because of hockey. Butters went to his first hockey game at five months old. Butters. Loves. Hockey.

Seriously.

Take plenty of food for your daughter. Some small toys. Buy her a Wings sweater and let her chew on a puck (Butters does. Best. Teething toy. Ever.). Get her down by the glass during warm-ups if you can, or mortgage the house so you can afford those seats on the glass. If her daddy loves hockey, she will too.

Damn Cute, Wil

Erin watches the Wings games with me at home, but I've felt like a heel for wanting to keep her up way past her bed time to go to a hockey game we could watch recorded the next day at home.

Fail.

You've been

You know. Nothing beats live.

Don't sweat the bedtime so much. Once in a great while isn't going to mess her up. We've taken my daughter to Preds games and we've bought tickets in the Family Fun Zone at the GEC (I still can't bring myself to call it the Sommet Center) and it's good for older kids. Mac is eight and she's all hockey crazy like her old man, step mom, and little brother.

Damn I'm going to miss her.

But at least I made her promise not to pull for any of those damn California teams.

Hear hear!

And I swear that tonight Erin tried to say "Red Wings". I wish I had it recorded so I could play it back over and over and over for the next 3 years.

Dead Wings

Ok, first you have to get your kids to like a team better than the dead wings. The sharks or flyers would be a good start.....

Anyway, I've taken my now 4 year old to three games for the Stockton Thunder, ECHL. For some reason the arena thinks that everyone there is hearing impared, and they blast the sound system to the point of pain. My son hates it. We usally move to the absolute back of the arena top row in a corner away from the speakers. It worked the second time. Last night though, we left after the 2nd period because he just would not sit still, and insisted on kicking peoples chairs, and climbing all over everyone's nerves.

Stockton lost anyway, so we didn't miss much.

Good tip

On the noise levels...not on the team recommendations. I think Erin would do ok with loud places (she sleeps through almost anything anyway, and the only noise that seems to bother her is the vacuum).

Sharks smell like dead sharks. HP is a nice tank, though. And the Flyers...well...McCarty in Game 4 is all I need to say about that, I think. And any team that invests money in Foppa Forsberg earns my eternal hatred.

I would love to take her to an ECHL game, but it would have to be the San Diego Gulls. Her mom and I lived in SD before she was born and those home games were awesomely raucous; just like the old OHL games I used to go to.

It's tough.

Go a few minutes late and plan on having to leave early. Gradually, you may be able to stay longer and longer as the little one gets older. Buy two of the cheapest seats and try to work your way down. Plan on being on the move a lot of the time. Walk around. Keep feeding them junk food (cotton candy, etc) or whatever special treats you sneak in. Space the junk/treats out wisely, this will buy you more time. Really get them into all the stupid songs and big screen crowd games: This is what they will love the most. Get them side tracked on some aspect of the game. Like, the goalies' masks or pretend the puck is some kind of little robot or alien zooming here and there away from all of the guys chasing it. Eagerly anticipate the Zamboni. Eagerly anticipate the pretty girls coming out on the ice (if you have them). And, once again, be ready to leave early without getting pissed off. Remember, the earlier you get there, the earlier you will probably have to leave.

I took

My 2 yr old to an App State football game this year. It started at 8 pm. We didn't get back to the motel till 1am. She did really well. The only real issue was her having to go potty. There is nothing worse than having to take your daughter into a football stadium bathroom. Undress her from the winter gear she's sporting then try and keep all that stuff off the urine soaked floor.

My wife and mother-in-law thought we crazy to even try it, but I figured it would work out as long as we went in with no real expectations. If we had to leave early, well, we would just have to leave early. No biggie.

Noise level was only an issue a couple of times.

Just Go!

It will be fun, don't worry about staying up late one night in a while (schedules are not the most important thing in the world).

A box of popcorn works wonders.

no go on the gulls

Gulls are gone. Folded two years ago. Same with the Long beach ice dogs. South, your options are the Bakersfield Condors, Fresno Falcons, or the Stockton Thunder for ECHL.

ECHL Map

Or NHL Ducks, Kings, or Sharks. There isn't any AHL out here.

I was wonderin'

Does a wet t-shirt contest count for sports? I only took my one-year old 'cause my wife was in the finals. It was a bonding moment.

Just ordered Blues tickets for March 4 against the Kings

Awesome deal from my wife's work, $60 tickets for 30. They do this every now and then, we went a few months ago and my 3 year old loved it. He's excited about this one too.

Baseball good. Basketball good. Hockey? I do not know...

Both my little ones have enjoyed cubs games in-utero, and made their first
"games on the outside" at just a few months old. Baseball games are easy on their little eyes and ears - lot's to see and listen to, but not too overwhelming. I've also taken my 3 yr. old son to at least 10 bulls games over his few years - he absolutely loves them, especially the mascot, benny the bull. It's amazing to see how early on kids know when and how to cheer, scream, and boo, etc. along with the home crowd. They automatically react to the music and energy, and seem to have a real sense of what's happening on the field or court, (as for the ice? we've never made it to a blackhawks game).
