Hi guys... I feel like I've been on another planet for the past couple of weeks... I almost have been. I just returned from a 11-day trip to Cubulco, Guatemala. 19 of us went down to build a 4-room school house (plus bathrooms and a storage room). It was a lot of work, very tiring, very dirty - but very rewarding!

I have posted all my pics on Flickr, you can see the "collection" at this address. You can browse by day or just see the 'few' I selected as my favorites by selecting the favorite set.

I also put a sub-set into the flickr SAHD Group Pool. If you're a Flickr member, please consider commenting on or marking some as favorites if they hit you in that way.

Cheers,
PittCaleb

nice photos

Looks like an interesting trip. It must have been a powerful experience. Any prior construction work in your resume?I did some volunteer work in India and came back, like you, feeling like I was on another planet. Thanks for sharing.

Well Done.

So, who watched your kids?

all rested now...

Sorry, I lost the RSS feed to the site for some reason and never saw follow-ups...

Construction experience - I consider myself an experienced DIY homeowner - I professionally (quality) finished my basement myself, subbing out only dirty jobs I didn't want to do (i.e. mudding/taping/painting). I built myself a cust wood shed in the back yard (attached to the garage). I can handle myself in the states no problem really.

But all the work we did was concrete block and steel, so none of my work except comfort level with tools came in handy :-) I'd say I spent 2/3 of my time shoveling dirt anyway :-) I helped the welders some and got to practice on one piece. But no wood (expensive they say and termite problems not to mention the earthquakes) and no drywall, so...

kids: My wife took off the Wed-Fri at the beginning of the trip. For the next full week that we were gone, we were truly blessed. Close friends from church, Omar & Maria... Omar was on the trip with me, and Maria works for the NY Public Schools which was on break that week. Since she was on break and was home to watch her kid because Omar was on the trip also, she watched both of my boys for me too (no cost). Without her help, I couldn't have made the trip...

Cheers,
PittCaleb

That's great.

We have a similar program in Honduras. I have often thought about going, but haven't been able to figure out what to do with the kids.

NJ

bring your kids to NJ, I'll watch 'em while you work in Honduras... They're well behaved, right? We got a Wii, DS lite and TiVo, I'm sure I can handle them...
