Can you please post a Bangers and Mash recipe? I need to make Bangers and Mash tonight, and I want to do it right. And if you don't post, I'll be forced to look for a recipe from otherwise anonymous sources.

uhm...

Would that be one package of link sausage and one box of instant mashed potatoes? Follow directions on the packaging. Oh, and don't forget to warm up a can or jar of brown gravy. You can dump it all over the mashed potatoes and sausages. Or, go really fancy, and instead of instant, boil some potatoes, mash them up and add some milk and butter. Salt to taste.

How's that, Chef? But, I bet you would suggest fresh beef sausages, butterflied, from your local butcher, fingerling potatoes, heavy cream and tons of fresh butter from your local dairy, and an English brown gravy from scratch using that awesome beef stock that you just happened to make over the weekend, and a little nutmeg.

Caring, Helpful, Excellent, Fubar.

Here You go

TT this is the best tasting one That I use on a regular basis.
Now the resipie JP is talking about is for the royal people who live across the pond. JP I actually only made Turkey stock this weekend.

Nutmeg, is what I like with my mushie peas.

* 8 large baking potatoes, peeled and quartered
* 2 teaspoons butter, divided
* 1/2 cup milk, or as needed
* salt and pepper to taste
* 1 1/2 pounds beef sausage ( From a butcher if possible if not use Johnsons )
* 1/2 cup diced onion
* 1 (.75 ounce) packet dry brown gravy mix ( or use a product called "Better than bullion" it will be in the soup isle )
* 1 cup water, or as needed

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F . Place potatoes in a saucepan with enough water to cover. Bring to a boil, and cook until tender, about 20 minutes. Drain, and mash with 1 teaspoon of butter, and enough milk to reach your desired creaminess. Continue mashing, or beat with an electric mixer, until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. ( I add a dash of tobasco at this point)
2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until heated through. Remove from pan, and set aside. Add remaining teaspoon of butter to the skillet, and fry the onions over medium heat until tender. Mix gravy mix and water as directed on the package, and add to the skillet with the onions. Simmer, stirring constantly, to form a thick gravy.
3. Pour half of the gravy into a square casserole dish so that is coats the bottom. Place sausages in a layer over the gravy (you can butterfly the sausages if you wish- per JP thats how I do it). Pour remaining gravy over them, then top with mashed potatoes.
4. Bake uncovered for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, or until potatoes are evenly brown.

Missing peas

Every time I've ever had bangers and mash there were peas with it. When I plate mine I layer all of it: mashed potatoes, peas, sausages, gravy. Of course this annoys the wife since she doesn't like her food all mixed together.

THANKS!

Incidentally, what if I were to use soy milk and canola margarine instead of cow milk and butter?

soy and margarine

hehe. Did TickTock say soy milk and margarine?
I think you could sub some tofu sausage as well.

And, to GamingW/bebe: Sounds like you are venturing more toward a shepherds pie dish by adding peas. Are you removing the sausage from the casing as well?

No Fair!

Soy-sage is made out of VTP not tofu! :-)
I will add that Morningstar Farms makes a smashing soysage and Franco American makes a great mushroom gravy. I make a veggie bangers all the time but I fry button mushrooms with gralic when I fry the soysage.

Be Seeing You.

try some bbq sauce instead of the gravy for a change in taste

I like this dish, but i usually change out the gravy with some Kraft Honey bbq sauce. Adds a tangy flavor to both the sausage and the mashed.

Interesting, Will.

Looks like the Irish version also uses pork sausages rather than the beef sausages used in the English version. Both sound pretty good.

Done Fixed It

It was real good yum. I used soy milk and real butter- a quality contradiction. The sausages were Trader Joe's Irish Bangers (probably regular sausages with fancy wrapping, right?). I didn't have a gorram potato masher, so I had to improvise. That sucked.

I also added mushrooms and peas because it sounded good. That was a bonus, too.

Soysage

No Prob. :-)
Good is always in the eye of the beholder, or tatseer. I will say that the veggie links from Boca are not good for Bangers and Mash as they get mushy fast. The best to fry are the Morningstar Farms and the new ones from Litelife.

Be Seeing You.
