So my sixteen month old has become obsessed with dirt. This can be messy on the playground but that I don't mind so much. Yesterday, he started getting into the dirt surrounding a large plant in our front room. This presents a problem. We could simply move the plant into another room but my wife wants to explore some other options and use that as a last resort. Anyone dealt with something like this before?
plant advice?

I laugh in sympathy. We used to have a planter in the middle of the house that my kids loved. When they started pulling themselves up, they pulled up on that stone planter. And then they became bigger and saw what was in it. Yahoo! Tons of dirt and pine bark nuggets to throw all over the living room floor!
They especially loved making the mess right after I put up the vacuum. Ahhh, good times.....
Anyway, I have no solution. Sorry. For me, it wasn't a huge deal most of the time. I just gave them a stern "no" and all that, and then picked them up moved them into the kitchen so they could play with the steak knives. :-) (i..e., distraction). Eventually they found other things, like toilet water, to be much more entertaining.

There are poisonous houseplants, not sure of the name; but in a naturally healthy plant, the leaves have a yellow pigment along with the green if the leaves are ingested. Dieffenbachia I think comes to mind but I am not sure.

Well I remember one of my sister had a similar obsession and somebody in my family just put one leave of the plant in her mouth (nothing dangerous), and she forgot to play around that plant again. Later in life she wouldn't accept any green lettuce.
