I'm sitting here watching the musical Rent and started wondering who else in here likes musicals? Who likes watching them? Who likes acting in them? I love doing both. My favorite musical is Hello Dolly (although I can't stand Carol Channing). I also love Scrooge and Guys and Dolls, both of which I've been in. Others I like are Oklahoma, The Music Man, Newsies, and Tom Sawyer (from back in the 70's).
Musicals

Every year my daughters are in a community theater production. All ways a musical. The oldest two have been in musicals in school. The high school just put on Seussical which they said was great.
Iv'e seen Wicked three times with the wife and kids in Chicago and New York and it was great.
All the kids like watching all the musicals we have. It can be a little nerve racking when the 4 year old starts singing from the musical Reefer Madness. That is one funny movie.
I would like to see Avenue Q but without the young ones because of the content. Also I"d like to see Spamalot, and the last show we saw was Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and that was funny.
So I quess the family likes all musicals.

I can't say I really like musicals. My wife was a drama major and had her own theater for many years. Since we have been together I have seen a lot of musicals and they are growing on me. I thinl "West Side Story" is a masterwork and RENT - which closing after 10 years - is good on film but was exceptional on stage.
I realy liked the "Oklahoma" with Hugh Jackson and I think "Oklahoma" is near to being the dumbest play ever.
"Dreamgirls," also a good'n
Be Seeing You.

Musicals are so stereotypically gay...
But, I admit that I like them too. I have seen a handful in London and New York. And, I have seen a couple in Boston.
Some of the amateur community productions can be pure torture, but there are often a few gems here and there.
Many years ago, I played in pit orchestras with my father for South Pacific, Guys and Dolls, Music Man & Oliver.
My wife grew up performing in musicals and is still quite the singer. She has a vast collection of CDs, videos and, yes, cassettes. I believe she was a Les Miserables junkie for many years.
So, see Mr. Rimmer, it looks like we do have something else in common!
Do you like to wear girly socks by any chance? I picked up some really goofy ones at Old Navy last week. I was always envious of cool girl socks growing up. It's fun now that I am an AHD, because I get to wear things like that. I have candy stripes, clovers, pirate skull & bones, light blue w/ navy blue toes, etc.

My first musical was Phantom of the Opera with my wife and another couple. I fell asleep (and I hadn't even been drinking). I woke up in a panic and looked over to see my wife passed out as well as the husband of the other couple. Meanwhile, his wife was singing away to the songs. I guess you could say I am not a big fan.
I also saw The Producers and Little Shop of Horrors. I liked Little Shop, but I had seen the movie, so I found myself comparing it the whole time. That might be why I liked it.
Does Stomp count as a musical? That was good.

Yep. Have been in "The Music Man", "Oliver", chorale version of "Phantom".
Can't say I like "Rent" that much though. My wife loves it, and we've seen it twice live, but I'll take "La Boheme" over it any day of the week.
And now I'm going to go eat some red meat and piss on things (<----------------this might become my new signature, since; I have to use it a lot.)

Before I met my wife, I had never seen a musical. She made me start watching some, and I now like quite a few of them. My favorite musical by far is RENT. I have seen it live three times, and some of the acts/songs still send chills through me. I have to say that I thought the film adaptation was rather good. And yes, I know almost every song from RENT by heart thanks to owning the CD collection. I have also seen live and enjoyed Les Miserables and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Musicals that I have only seen on film that I really enjoyed were Phantom of the Opera, The Sound of Music, Cats, The Producers, Little Shop of Horrors, and Grease.

Last week I took Tavie (5) to see Stomp, because we got free tickets, $60 bucks a pop is a little rich for the Brown family these days, but Tavie was RIVETED, I would suggest it highly. We lucked out that the tickets came a week before her birthday so it got to do double duty. I can still sing (poorly) almost every part to all the musicals I did lights for in college. It's also funny that this thread started today, because I was thinking about going back and watching "Jesus Christ Superstar" after going to the Good Friday service tonight.

Randy, the movie of Grease with Olivia Newton John and John Travolta was awesome! My wife and I both love it. We've seen the live stage version too, but the movie is actually much better because Olivia and John made them add a slight story line to tie it all together better.

The closest I come to enjoying musicals is laughing my ass off over "Waiting for Guffman" and HBO's "Flight of the Conchords."
My father has done community theater since long before I was born, so I've seen more than my share of amateur productions, both musical and non-musical. Never really enjoyed them except to make fun of their bad quality. Still, I respect the effort that community theater folks put in. I know it's hard work and I enjoy watching my father on stage (although he's 79 now and doesn't do as much acting, and I don't travel to see him as much).
I've heard good things about "Once," which won the Academy Award for "Best Song" I believe.

Annie is another fovorite of the clan. "Little Girls" is one of the songs I hum around the house with a glass of gin.
Also a very funny movie/musical is Into The Woods. High Schools and Jr. High will perform it but only the first acts. It's what happens to the cast in the second half that funny.

I forgot. What about High School Musical? I have never disliked something so much while at the same time becoming addicted to the songs. Part of my dislike is pure snobbery. How could this be a musical? The other part of me dislikes it because it seems to be all rolled into the same ball of wax as the Hannah Montana phenomenon.

Annie, Sound of Music, Music Man, Oliver, Cats (a bit), Hello Dolly, Guys and Dolls, and my all-time fave is Singing in the Rain with Gene Kelly and -- more importantly -- Donald O'Conner. There. I'm out.
But I guess my tastes are a bit old, for the most part.
Actually, thanks, David. You've reminded me to look into the summer musical series they run in town every year. I think my eight-year-old is ready for it, too.

Until I went to see Lion King and Wicked...Both were wicked awesome. I guess I like musicals now. I'll be more open or receptive to musicals since seeing them.
I was Kenickie in my High School play of Grease. I didn't have to sing too much.

I tend to like the older, classic musicals too. There's nothing wrong with the new stuff, but I just like the elegance (if that's the right word) of the older stuff.
