Closet Stank

Hi Guys,
I have about reached my limit with my coat closet. It has a musty vaguely tobacco oriented odor I can't get rid of. I have tried many of the commercially available remedies, my fave being baking soda, and my wife loves to put air fresheners in the closet. I can't stand that because it only ads an artificial stink to the unwanted stank. I open the door for a few minutes a day and that helps but it isn't enough.

The problem may be poor ventilation and I know a neighbor smokes cigars, but, anyone have thoughts on how to keep a less odiferous home?

Closet Overhaul

Try emptying it, airing it out then deciding what everybody really wants to keep (more than likely there will be relics you can part with), dontate the relics to Good Will. Wash or dry clean what you want to keep and then reload the closet. If your stank returns, clear the closet contents to the garage, air it out and place one item back into it until the stank returns and you have found the stankmaster. Then have efigy and get rid of it regardless of the protest.

here's one

You might try dropping a match in it. If it doesn't instantly explode, then I would follow Mile Hi'sadvice.

Could it be the walls?

If so, Killz works great.

fresh coat of paint...

Yes, a good clean-out, then a fresh coat of paint, (Kilz is a great idea, I'll have to use it next time). If it's a humidity issue, a rented electric dehumidifier would dry it out, and remove most the stank, in about one to two days time. I've got one running full time in my basement, it does wonders for my stank.

You could

put in a cedar backing in the closet. I did it and I'm not that handy. It's a great smell that does not cling to your clothes. Also it looks great. They are tongue and groove planks of cedar. The wife will think you are a superstar too.
