ok, didnt know how else to word it.
My 18 month old daughter was doing great on her speech, then we got some of those baby videos with the sign language. she took to that really well.

then about a month an a half ago, she just stopped called me daddy. she just used the sign.. that lasted about a week, and she dropped the sign.. now she calls me "ma"

WTH!!!! this is hitting me hard. its not easy going from working to being an at home dad. To be honest i feel like im back in school with out a clue.
Its been about two years and im finaly getting into a pattern, but it just sucks when your doin the dishes and your girl walks in and says "ma please?"

is this a normal thing for girls/kids to do? i never had this happen with my son.

thanks for the help

Joshua

My daughter... who now calls me "ma ma"

I bet I hear it 10 times a day. Mine are old enough that they self-correct "Mom, err, Dad, can I have..." And the oldest has been home with me full-time since he was 8 months old!

I bet it is a side effect of seeing positive "mom" models everywhere and so many fewer "dad" models that she is just trying to figure out where it is you fit into the world. Plus I would say she will grow out of it. (But my 6 yr old makes me think otherwise!) :)

It worked in my favor

Last night my boy woke up in the middle of the night and started calling for Mama. He has never done that before but it was an excuse to say" he wants you babe" and roll back over to sleep.

Rejoice Man!

I enjoy it and relish it when she gets requested by name. There will be times when it's all going to be you, so go with it!
Makes her feel like she is contributing as well.

Getting you back.

I bet I begin with the wrong name about 1,000 times a day when I am calling or talking to one of my boys. They are used to it by now, I think. So, when they call me mommy-daddy or mamadad or daddymamma, it's really no big deal. But, I do correct them most of the time.

Awkward moment, but...

Keep in mind that you're uncomfortable about it because of an underlying emasculation insecurity that can come with switching traditional gender roles. She is no more confused about your domestic title than my own child is about the difference between "yesterday" and "tomorrow". These are just grammar problems that a toddler's mind is trying to sort out. The fact that she only used a sign for "Dad" for a while means to me that she needs to adjust to vocalizing the appropriate word again. Keep at it, and she'll figure it out.

It only takes one, Chef.

It only takes one child to be an expert.

Like JP I will sometimes go

Like JP I will sometimes go through the names to get to the right one.
They also will call me mom at times but usually when I'm at the stove.
I answer, When have you ever seen your mother at the stove cooking.:-)
