V Day

I mentioned a while ago that I planned to get a vasectomy. Well, tomorrow is V Day! Can't say I'm excited for the procedure or the pain/discomfort afterwards, but I'll be glad to get it done. I'm 43, have two great kids and don't want any more, and am looking forward to consequence-free sex!

I'll probably be posting here a bit more over the weekend, as I'll be laid up.

Had a scare

Nothing will get you motivated to make that appointment than, "How do you feel about a fourth?" of course about the time I got to the place where I was OK with it, we found out that she wasn't pregnant but I was on the phone within the week, and beyond a weekend of video game playing on the couch, it was not that big of a deal, in my opinion.

relaxing now

The procedure was quick and relatively painless. A few pangs and general aches and cold splashes of antiseptic. My doctor had little personality; reminded me a bit of James Cromwell. "Dry shaving coming up now" he mumbled before shaving me a bit down there. "Some pressure on the left side" as he began poking and prodding.

Thankfully the two nurses were there to conduct small talk and keep me focused on other things. I didn't feel weird at all with my naughty bits flappin' in the breeze.

Now I'm home on the couch watching mindless TV and typing here, ice packs at the ready.

have a great recovery

I was happy to read about your v surgery. Hope everything turns out allright. I've been thinking about having it done myself. I'm 39 and pretty sure I'm not having any more kids, unless of course I divorced, hooked up with Jessica Alba and she wanted to have a kid.

Make the most out of life...you only have one!

thanks

I suspect tomorrow I may be a little more sore, or perhaps in bed tonight. But right now it's not too bad. Still a bit light-headed when I get up, combination of muscle relaxants beforehand and general anesthetic at the time, I guess. And my body trying to heel and maintain its manliness ;)

update

I didn't take it easy as much as I should have over the weekend, what with my son's birthday party yesterday and wanting to hang out in the beautiful weather with my family and neighbors. Definitely feeling worse today than I thought I would, although it's not horrible.

Gotta go, the little one's crying, with runny snot streaming down her face.

No pun

Hang in there- no pun intended. My wife offered to take the kid to her parents house for a couple of days when/if I get the surgery. Sounds like that might be a good idea for me- it's too tempting to play with the kid when she's around.

When you say "feeling worse" what kind of pain is it? A dull ache like you've been kicked in the nuts or a sharp pain?

My funny...

I scheduled mine for a Thursday a couple years back. All good and planned the weekend so I didn't have anything to do, etc.

I ran a couple departments at church at the time. Sunday morning I had arranged for someone to take over my duties and arrived 2 minutes after the hour, just wanting to sit in the back pew and relax.

Senior Pastor comes running up to me, "Where have you been? Been looking for you!" He was doing a big appreciation thing this week and my presence was required on stage, I had to say something about all the people who worked for me, and stand up there for 15 minutes while everyone else did their thing.

I hobbled through it and some women helped me up and down the steps. They thought I injured myself playing hockey or something, which I allowed them to believe. When I got down and back to the rear of the sanctuary, 2 men walked up to me and said "V Day?" LOL

Hang in there!

dull ache

It's a dull ache, nothing I haven't felt before. I think if I'd taken it easier a bit more over the weekend I'd be feeling better, but maybe not. The baby's sleeping now, so I'm having a nice rest on the couch.

v-day

IT was not too much of a big deal, YES STAY down as long as you can, I thought I was tuff guy the day after, up taking care of my twin boys, the older two had gone to their moms house for her visit time. Just the smallest amount of lifting that I did, twins were 3 months at the time, and oh MY GOD one wrong move is all it took to make it feel like I had been kick in the groin.

So take it from the BEEN there DONE that, take it easy.

bummed

Almost two weeks since my procedure and I'm still in recovery mode. Between taking care of the kids, including having to pick up and carry my 11-month-old girl, and having busy weekends when I can't just relax enough, this is taking a while. In addition, I had two hernia operations when I was a kid, which have weakened my groin and abdominal muscles, thereby further delaying my return to full activity. Still a bit swollen and sore. Have had to miss two baseball games, and will miss another this Sunday, which bums me out.

Life is still good, but just not as active as I'd like to be now.

Come on, Dave!

I told my wife this weekend that I'd do it. I'll make an appointment w/ my primary, tell him I want it done, he'll refer me somewhere, and there you go. I am so not a fan of pain, but your posts (plus conversations w/ others) convinced me that I could deal with it (I'm a mega wimp).

Now, two weeks later, you tell me that you still have some discomfort? "Still a bit swollen and sore." Yikes! On top of that, I too had hernia operations (and some testical work . . . TMI, I know) when I was a kid.

I keed, of course, but only to a degree. I'm scared! Give me some good news, man!
:)

I'm just bitchin'

Didn't mean to bum you out, AMR!

I'm just bitchin' because nobody in my life wants to hear it. And there are plenty of people I haven't even told about the vasectomy, so I don't want to open up to them about it now and complain.

I'm being proactive, doing some stretching exercises that I learned a few years ago when I had a groin injury playing baseball, icing more than I had been and keeping up with my Tylenol Extra-Strength Shit. It's really more of a nuisance. If I wasn't missing baseball games, I wouldn't care that much. I'm gonna call the urologist tomorrow to see what else I can do, two weeks out.

Just make sure when you do it, and your doctor says, "With your hernia scar tissue, you need to be vigilant with icing," that you really ARE vigilant with your icing. And that you rest as much as possible the first few days, and keep up with icing and not exerting yourself too much if possible.

You can do it!
