I know this is un-PC and very anti at home parent but…I…I hate Noggin.

About 20 minutes into any of their shows and I feel like I can’t breath. I’d like to squish Mose A. Mose. It’s puzzle time? No it isn’t first a song, then a promo, then more nonsense, a hint that it’s puzzle time, more promos, and finally a puzzle. Then Dora, Diego, The Backyardagins, etc. come on and shout at me for 26 min.

I do my best to let my daughter watch the shows she likes toward bedtime but I need to be in the other room.

Quick solution

Kill your TV
My kids have never seen any of those shows and I think they are better for it.

Sprout

My son knows nothing of noggin. He unfortunately knows about Caliou on sprout, but I can use that 30 minutes as nap time. Thomas the Train I dig, and often watch with him to use as reference ideas for my train set. Besides those, my son loves watching "Deadliest Catch", "How it's Made", and has been asking me all month when the next hockey game is on TV. Not bad for a 4 year old!

We just let him watch his first Tom and Jerry Cartoon last night and he laughed his little ass off for an hour, and I was right there laughing with him.

Nick Jr

We have the Nick Jr channels, and Dora and Diego are cool, but only because my 6 year old learned more spanish from them then I can remember from taking it for 4 years in high school. She can count in spanish, knows all the colors, numbers, etc. I like the backyardigans only because they encourage imagination, and the theme song is catchy. You mentioned Thomas the Train. I swear, if I had to watch an entire episode, I'd put a gun to my head. If I ever hear "you are a very useful engine" one more time in my life, it will be too soon. What you really want to watch out for is that damn spongebob. My daughter loves it now, and it drives me crazy. She even laughs like him, and will talk like him at times, and I wish I would have never turned it on. I turned to it because it was more adult like then some of the other stuff she wanted to see. At the time I think the choice was either spongebob or teletubbies. I'm not sure what I'd choose right now. I know that if I see someone in a stupid costume with a coat hanger on thier head, eating this slop called "tubby custard", and a tv in thier stomach, I just might puke.

We only watch the Backyardigans

In the beginning, he would watch for about 5 to 10 minutes at a time. Now, we can almost get a full episode in before he is on to something else. Having said that, we only allow one, maybe two, episodes each day. I rather he spend time playing with toys or spending time outside at the park.

taylorjm: I'm not a big fan of either Teletubbies or Spongebob. Unfortunately, my nieces and nephews watch Spongebob all the time. So, when they are here, guess what's on TV?

In line with what

In line with what redsquirrel said, but maybe not so drastic as killing anything.

If your TV is like mine, it is equipped with feature usually found on the front, side or top panel or on the hand-held "remote control" called by the names "power" or "on-off" button. Try using that!

Toward bedtime we find reading works well. TV tends to over-stimulate kids. (not matter what they are watching!)

look for kipper

At one time or another, my son was into all of the shows mentioned above. In and of themselves, I don't mind any of them (although I'll admit that Moose A. Moose on Noggin annoys the hell out of me), but it's the desire to watch them over and over again (via on-demand) that killed me. Right now my son, who's 6, won't watch TV, except for a few minutes of Thomas (he's totally into subway trains right now). I wouldn't mind if he watched a little bit more, as he gets on my nerves sometimes when he gets home from camp.

My favorite kids show is "Kipper," which is in Sprout I believe. Totally mellow, totally British, totally easy on the mind. My daughter just turned 1, and I hope to get her into "Kipper," for my own sake.

I'm With Dave . . .

but don't at all feel offended by #2 (not really anti-PC) or Matt (I mean, with all the stuff to do in Statesville, NC, who needs TV . . . I'm here all week, Matt). Between 7am and 8am, if the kids watch a Backyardigans followed by an episode of the Berenstain Bears while I drink my two mugs of coffee and read the paper, I'm quite happy. But, like Dave's son, I am already finding that my 4 year boy loses interest in the shows quickly and typically disappears to, coincidentally, his own train area for the rest of the early morning.

Noggin (or recorded Noggins, or On Demand Noggins or Sprouts or whatever) typically will make a second appearance for 30 minutes at lunch and then perhaps 30 minutes while I prepare dinner. Really, it's more Dora for my 18 month old more than anything. My son would prefer to do puzzles, play outside, etc. (I already let him go out back on his own), though he will sit through a 25 minute Scooby Doo. I will totally admit to actually liking some of the music numbers Noggin puts on between shows. I've always had a thing for "hippy chicks" and many of the girls are, imho, quite hot. My girl sings along, I stare along . . . win-win.

Bad father of the year!

This may earn me the bad father of the year award.
We happen to have hbo and starz so my son watches mostly movies Pirates of the Carribean, Open season, etc.
Now this is what earns me the award I am in the process of breaking him from family guy.
It all started when he was a baby he loved the opening song and the bright colors but now he is three and a half and it is too much.
As we speak he is trying to convince me that he is "bigger" to watch Fletch but a PG rating in 1989 not sure it has been a long time since I have seen it.
Anyway I got lucky my son did Thomas the train all day everyday for about 3 months and that was it.
Like Matt said kill your tv. I on the other hand would never even consider killing the only baby sitter I have.
If and when my sons watch any of those shows I have just learned to tune it out or it is when I am cleaning and I put the radio on for myself.

Our tv

Unfortunately, our tv is on just about all day, but I've been getting into the habit of changing it to a music channel. No videos, just basically the radio on tv. My daughter is just now figuring out that the music channels are boring, and they never end!! No commercials, no new shows, so when I say she's had enough tv, I switch it over. She's slowly getting weaned off it and going to do other things, plus I like having music in the background without all the commercials.

So what's your take on Sesame Street? I recently started recording them all because my 16 mth old gets a kick out of me playing with the stuffed sesame street characters we have, and she thinks its funny to see them on tv. Plus, I remember watching it when I was little. Although, mainly all I remember is watching it with my dad and him calling it "the Maria show" because he though Maria was hot !! I think she's still on it, and aging very well I might add...lol

Humm...OK I know that

Humm...OK

I know that posting or talking about the TV in any parenting context is a tricky subject. I’m not offended and I don’t want to inadvertently offend anyone else as I know your responses are tongue and cheek but, give me a break. I was tying to see if anyone else felt the same way about Noggin, not to discuss the good/evil of the boob tube.

In a larger context, my daughter and I have been sick with a fever and there hasn’t been a whole lot of room for much else other than sitting on the couch. So there has been more TV than usual. My daughter got hooked on Dora at my in-laws while I was away. Now she can’t get enough. She loves to sing and dance along to The Backyardagins and to be honest it puts her in a happy mood for her bath and book time with her Mother before bed.

I respectfully disagree about not having watched shows like Dora. While I would personally like it if my daughter didn’t watch any TV, but, since she is off to pre-school in the fall, and when she is with her little friends, it’s good for her to know about Dora as a kind of proto-shared culture and understanding. But, again, that’s just me.

Be Seeing You.

Ahhh...my fault

"(I) was tying to see if anyone else felt the same way about Noggin."

Well in that case, YOU ARE WRONG! Bwahahahaha! Just kidding, of course. And trust me, when any of us (the two kids or myself) are sick, the TV is definitely on a bit more than usual. As for Noggin, I actually think The Backyardigans is a remarkably clever show. They use their imaginations to take them to places and times rooted in some history all the while singing songs that are plays off of popular music (sometimes classical, sometimes rock). I could listen to Alicia Keys sing the "Boinga" song on the radio. Mose A. Moose -- well, let me just say that if you could hear my 18 month old try and sing along with "Beside the Seaside" you'd admire Mose a bit more. Noggin -- without commercials or scary imagery of any kind -- is a good channel.

Sesame Street -- awesome. Sprout On Demand always has 10-12 that you can throw on at a moments notice.

the order

Nothing wrong with TV as long as the zombie face does not appear. Our media order is...
1. reading anything. I read the newspaper aloud while he plays or one of his books, or one of my own.
2. Music / play inside - outside
3. Music / play inside - outside
4. TV but under my control. Like Brian said On-Off. Very important button.
5. Repeat..with no TV after 5pm

We have actually been surprised with his TV viewing as he really is not into it. There have been some days where he is just so crazy with energy that I need a break and have tried to pop him in front of it and he would rather play.

As far as Noggin I don't know what it is so I cannot comment, but it sounds like a lot of Ads and quick segments that can't help with attention spans. Is it a collection of shows or a block of time on a channel?

Try TiVo...

We (the parents) record what we think is appropriate for him to watch - right now it's the Backyardigans or Mama Mirabelle's, which isn't on very much. He doesn't watch anything on TV, unless the Backyardigans is on live TV. And, I second JIMPMC's suggestions. We follow the same schedule/order.

Ads

I agree about the ads. My daughter watches Sprout for a show or two and Noggin for a show or two. I prefer the lack of adds, and am thankfull that there are such options available. I also have a few shows on DVD if I need to clean cook or do the other things we all have to do.

Ya know most people like "The Backyardagins". I don't. I didn't like "Friends" either but no acounting for taste.

I hate to soap box but I wouldn't tell y'all to turn off your TV's when it comes to your kids. My daughter does all sorts of playtime things I was mearly asking if anyone else found Noggin hard to watch. If you don't then great if you do then that's great too.
Be Seeing You.

Personally I do not watch

Personally I do not watch too much of Noggin on TV however, have experienced what you are talking about. Especially when I do on demand kids shows and they play all the damn commercials. I have also worked at weaning my twins of Caliou as he is just too much of a whiny brat however, Backyardigans, Dora, Diego, Wonder Pets on Nick Jr are helpful shows. PBS Sprout has Dragon Tales, Kipper, Noddy and local PBS has Clifford The Big Red Dog. These shows help us get our day started then we do other things as well. It is just something that helps keep them under control while I clean up from breakfast and check the newspaper and fantasy sports.

I don't watch a lot of TV myslef. So little that my wife and I have gone backand forth over getting a TiVo type device. I don't see any need for it but my wife would love one. (shrug) I suppose I could record The Batman on the WB.

Take it for Wha it is Worth

I would personally like to jab my own eye with a dull knife rather than watch Dora, Wubzy, Diego, or the Backyardigans. That being said, my 3 YO loves them. She really only gets them about 1 hour a day. Outside of Noggin she loves The Little Mermaid. I would ridicule TV watching, but because of Dora, my daughter calls the moon "luna" and when she wants something opened she says "abra", even though she knows the english words. To me this is priceless, and educational.

When the shows are off, she reenacts them (I forgot Little Bear) to perfection. I hate them, but I am sure she is not fond of Sportscenter either. I guess we tolerate what others love for a reason...

I dvr all of the hated shows

if my 2.9 asks at any time to watch TV ..i don't let her watch any for that day ..and she and I have more fun together..Mom has now joined in. We haven't told her not to ask, we are letting her find out on her own. Ask and don't receive ... Some days it is tougher because I wanna plots her down in front of it to have some time to clean and get caught up on my chores. Ultimately I feel she is better off with out it. But I also feel a little Sesame Street is OK. We are really into our potty vids now too.

How we watch

I was an early TiVo adopter and highly recommend it. With our first, we were able to pass over all the commercials and avoided the constant "I want that" that we'd hear from other kids. Also allows you to watch more adult programs and skip over questionable parts. We are big commercial skippers - can't say enough good things about that. In fact, I love to watch American Gladiators but despise the hoo-rah stuff between events - so it only takes me about 25 minutes to watch an 1-hour episode :) DVR's are good too but the extra programming features make a difference. You can say the same about SageTV, MythTV, etc. I'm starting to look into these because they have better internet connectivity than TiVo currently has.

Since my son is now older and can control the TiVo, we see more commercials and generally watch more TV. I watch the least in my family. My wife, unfortunately, is a huge Law&Order fan. My daughter is into Spongebob bigtime - the rest of us have gotten tired of reruns. That's a downside of a DVR - you can watch the same program over and over and over, etc. However, we're all still big fans of the Sponge - the quality of the humor and writing is much better than most kids shows. Same goes for Jimmy Neutron. On the other side, Fairly Oddparents is grating and epileptic.

My daughter also loves to watch Backyardigans. I've never noticed the Moose-A-Moose thing, I guess because we just record the show rather than have the channel on for extended times. Not to make it sound like you've got it on all day - we watch mostly recordings and not much live.

huzzah for Netflix!

With what little gaps our library stocks as far as kids shows, I fill in with Kids DVD selections on my Netflix. Network TV? only if qued up from my DVD player (which we can control way better than anything else). No more Noggin, Sprout, Nikelodeon, and especially no screaming TV Ads.

And Calliou can expect alot of wedgies when he grows up....

Aye, there's nary an animal alive that can outrun a greased scotsman...

Caillou got banned quickly

Caillou got banned quickly from our house, after our son started acting just like that little brat. "I don't WANT to go to the store!" "I don't WANT to play with my sister!"

And what kind of a name is "Caillou" anyway?

Tivo and DVR's are nice but the library rules!

Having been way guilty of giving the "brainless babysitter" (TV) too much time in our house, I can now say the library rules. My local library has story time a couple days a week, as well as a plain old play time once a week with crafts, snacks etc. Hopefully, yours will be as useful as ours for assisting in using your time wisely.

As far as programs go, too much of any one of those mentioned annoys me these days, with SpongeBoob SquareAss at the top of my list. Big shout out to Animal Planet's Zaboomafoo though. Even I can watch 2 of those in a row without wanting to wring someone's neck. But most of those other animal shows are too specific--I mean how many snake guys do we really need on television? Most of these other twits are just way too interested in their own delusions of cleverness and far too over-caffeinated for my tastes.

But that's just me, I could be wrong. The real acid test is when your kids think the guy's a nitwit, then you're pretty sure it isn't just an adult thing.

I think "Caillou" is French and roughly translates to "whiny little brat destined to be the poster boy for wedgies and getting stuffed into a locker."

In the morning

I let my daughter watch Nick Jr in the mornings after we drop my wife off at work and while I clean and prep dinner. Dora, Diego, Yo Gabba Gabba and the likes. I think its great that these shows teach a lot of stuff about spanish, animals and whatever random crap they do on Yo Gabba Gabba. We usually settle down for nap time while watching SpongeBob. After nap time though she doesn't want to watch TV at all and just play play play.

I have a very, very strict

I have a very, very strict "no Caillou" policy in my house. Nothing pisses me off quicker than hearing that ***damn voice! The Hoobs are also on my short list.

I try to maintain my sanity by regulating the TV, but we do have a routine where there is some TV zombie time. And there is some messed up show on noggin called Lazytime/town or something like that I've only seen parts of it twice, but WTF!?!

Lazytown

Oh man, my daughter went through the lazytown phase and that was all she wanted to watch. At first it was wierd, but they do teach about fitness and not being a couch potato. The coolest part is that sportacus guy and some of the moves he can do. Wow. I guess he was some kind of gymnist champion or something. The most impressive thing I've seen him do is a one handed push-up. Some of you might not think that is so special, but when I say one handed, I mean one handed, and NOTHING MORE touching the ground!! This guy would do a normal push up and hold himself up, then go to one hand under his chest, then move his legs off to the sides and off the ground!! Wow. Not too many guys impress me, but I have to say, that one did!!

actually my 5yo and 2yo like watching lazytown. but they don't sit and watch, they try to jump and run and spin, just like sporticus...they get 20 minutes of a great cardio workout every morning...
