Interesting blog post on New York Times parenting blog. It references an at home dad who blogs on Salon who posted an essay about cognitive impairment caused by parenting. If you read this, also read some of the comments after the blog post. I feel there's some truth on both sides of the issue.

The article came off as offensive to some commenters, and it was definitely flippant, but look at it this way though - we are hard wired to focus on the wellbeing of our children, and soon everything that cannot be related to them pales in significance. There are many many things that do however - a career and it's security qualify. Investing for the future qualifies. Thoughts of safety suddenly become paramount, often for the first time ever. You DO become 'mushy' about things that no longer hold importance to you.
