Hello everyone.
My name is Sam, I'm 40 and I've been a stay at home dad for a while. I really can't say that I'm a stay at home dad these days, since our son is almost 18. The main reason I stay at home these days, is due to chronic pain. I haven't worked for over 3 years now, and according to the state of california, my wife makes too much money for me to claim disability.

I'm bored, and just was looking for some community that I can come to to talk with others, who are kind of in the same boat I am. I got out of the US Air Force in 90 to raise our son, while my wife continued her Air Force career. She retired in 05, and now works for a local car dealership. I so wanted to go back to work once she retired, and let her enjoy being a stay at home mom. But i have too many medical problems to make it thru a day at a job.

It's upsetting, and I get depressed. So if you all don't mind me stopping by and joining in on your conversations, and maybe make a few friends along the way.

Thanks
Sam

Lets see, Joined the AF in

Lets see, Joined the AF in 84, and I was AMMO (munitions) First base was Hill AFB utah, then went off to Turkey, where I met my wife in 87. Left turkey in 89 stationed at Cannon AFB NM. And joined the wife up in Ellsworth South Dakota. From there we went to MT Home idaho, then she went to be an air force recruiter in Clovis California. Then we went to Nellis AFB in Las Vegas NV. That's where she retired, and then we moved here to Victorville CA to take care of her grandma. (she was in AGE for her AF career)

We think we have the boy talked into joining the Air Force once he graduates this next year. But we'll see, if the world doesn't change by then, who knows what he'll decide to do. He's always welcome here aslong as he get a job and goes to school (not that we could afford to help him there)

Talk to you all later
Sam

Welcome, Sam

Welcome, Sam...I'm glad you found us and took the time to join up, I look forward to you chiming in on the various discussion here. You'll undoubtedly have a lot to add since your kid is a teen...there are a lot of questions and discussions here about younger kids that can always benefit from the voice of someone who has been through it already.

You'll find a mix here: I think the average age of the Dads here is probably close to yours (maybe closer to mid-30's, I'm also 40), most of us have younger kids (mine are 5 & 7), but we do have a few Dads with kids ranging up into their 20's.

If you're looking for some real-world at-home Dad interaction, try to join us in Kansas City in early November for the 12th Annual At Home Dads' Convention if your medical challenges don't keep you from travelling (see elsewhere on this site for info). We have a great session we're repeating from last year that specifically addresses depression and isolation...I took it as a good sign that there was more laughter coming from that break-out room than just about any other session, and the people who participated had very positive things to say about it.

- Andy

Thanks for the welcome

Thanks for the welcome everyone. I'd love to meet up with everyone, but we live on a pretty tight budget, and until things get better, or i can finally get some sort of disability (either state or military) then there will be no traveling in our near future.

I raised our son many times on my own with my wife had to go on tour in the air force for months on end. So I have some very hard times and stories there. I'll share them with who ever asks. Sometimes its good just to get them off your chest.

Glad to finally find a place to chat with others like myself.

Talk with ya soon.
